BIG BREAKFAST: - in Streete Parish Park took place last Sunday and was organized by the Chairman and committee of the park. We wish to thank all who supported and helped selling tickets etc. for the event which was an outstanding success. Full report will be included in these notes next week.
SOCIAL DANCE: - on Friday night last was once again a very enjoyable night in Streete Parish Park Centre when music was provided by Philip English from County Kildare. It was heartening to see an increase in numbers and we enjoyed meeting up with a group of tourists from Holland who were brought along by well known and popular music entrepreneur, Ray Dolan from Mullingar. These people were anxious to see what social dancing was, so Kevin Brady was in contact with Ray and as they say the rest is history. We received much appreciation from the tourists and we thank Ray for including us on Face book. Keep an eye on these notes for future dates, the next of which is Friday night, 16th November when as always Mary O’Connor and Pat Kelly will supply their renowned style of tunes to guarantee you stay on the dance floor all night. On admission each night everyone receives a free raffle ticket and supper is served compliments of the organisers. We thank the ladies from the office, Anne Creamer and Mary McBrien with help from caretaker, Gerry O’Neill who made fresh sandwiches, cakes, tea, coffee etc. Admission to dance is only €10 and all are welcome. If any group would like to come along just contact Kevin 087 1375222 in advance, so we can be organised or let Mary or Anne know in the office 043 6685926. Dates and names for future dances available on request. Boherquill Ramblers The Ramblers had a splendid walk in Deerpark forest on the outskirts of Virginia, County Cavan and beside Lough Ramor on Sunday 14 October 2018. The beautiful calm weather tempted a few yachts and anglers boats out onto the Lough with swans at the waters' edge. There was even birdsong as the group followed the trails through the forest where many of the trees were clad in autumn colours. Many thanks to Joe Masterson who researched and led the walk. On Sunday 28 October the Ramblers will sample autumn in Mullaghmeen Forest on a walk led by Joe Masterson. Cars will leave Boherquill at 1.30pm and pause outside the Town and Country pub in Castlepollard at 1.40pm before moving on to start the walk at 2pm in Mullaghmeen. New members are always welcome. WALKING: it is worth while taking a trip around Streete Parish Park to see the great job done with diggers by Seamus Sullivan which cleaned up the triangle piece of land at the bottom corner of the walkway – a great improvement to the Park, so why not go for a walk and see the improvement yourself. BOHERQUILL RAMBLERS: - The Ramblers travelled to Dublin on Sunday 7 October 2018 for a walk round the Glenasmole Reservoirs near Bohernabreena. The low level of water in the reservoirs was immediately noticeable with large stony and grassy areas which would normally be covered now above the water level. There was no shortage of 'mellow fruitfulness' on the bushes beside the trail, though, with lots of blackberries, rose hips and hazel nuts ready to be gathered. Unfortunately there was also a lot of invasive Japanese knotweed in many places. Thank you to Mary McHugh and her brother Francis who organised the day, to Salmon's Coaches of Castlepollard and their driver Martin Fagan and to the staff in the wonderful clubhouse at the Thomas Davis GAA Club who served tasty warm scones, tea and coffee before the walk. Near the town the towpath was lined with oak and beautiful old beech trees which were starting to show their autumn colours with contrasting evergreen blocks of laurel on one stretch. The occupiers of the bat boxes in the trees were not to be seen but there were many ducks and moorhens grouped beside the footpath. COMMUNITY ALERT: - meeting was held in the Parish Park last Wednesday night, a good turn out on the night although, in fairness it could have been better. A new working committee was elected and I am glad to report the group are working on a new plan at the moment. Next community alert meeting will be held on Wednesday 17th at 8.30 in the Parish Park. This is an important meeting with members of the special crime unit and community Garda on hand to answer questions on all your safety concerns, both on home security and farmyard theft. A new crackdown called operation Thor which has now commenced throughout the Midlands has been welcomed. It is also sad to hear the news that in recent weeks a number of brake inns have occurred in our neighbouring parishes and one attempted theft at a farm yard locally. This goes to prove we must come together as a community and be vigilant at all times. If you see any suspicious activity please report it as soon as possible to 044 9384000. If you would like to become involved, call 087 1375222. More next week. First stop was a meeting with Ray Dolan in Mullingar to make a live video then all back on the bus and onwards to Munshells restaurant, Tullamore for breakfast. We then proceeded onto Owen’s classic car collection Abbyleix, and with some very classy cars on show, Pat Denning got his chance to test drive a 1930 Porsche. Next it was onto the Irish fishing and shooting museum Durrow and after some tea and sandwiches the ladies left for Kilkenny city. Walter Phelan gave a very informative talk and then brought us on a guided tour of the museum. Ireland's oldest pub Morrissey's of Abbeyleix was our next port of call where a “few pints of plain” went down a treat. Our final stop of the evening was Abbeyleix Manor Hotel for dinner and overnight stay. After a very enjoyable dinner Chairman Joe Kelly said a few words and made presentations to our three founder members. Brendan Mulligan, Pat Denning and Seamus Denning for their service to the club over the past 40 years. He also presented Mary Mulligan and Peggy Denning with a Bouquet of flowers for all their cookery skills displayed each Thursday night during night shoots. - Speaking of cookery skills, I must mention the excellent job that Denise Tighe made of the birthday cake, all staff in the hotel wanted to know how she made the duck? as the saying goes - "some can do it, but you know how" great job Denise well done. A special word of thanks to Christy Salmon from Salmon bus hire Castlepollard - a great bit of banter with that man, and would highly recommend him for future trips away. On my own behalf and I know I speak of the rest of the crew that travelled, a special word of thanks to our Secretary, Seamus for organising a great weekend from start to finish. - Happy 40th Streete Wildlife club!! |
