Boherhillquill Ramblers

The Ramblers avoided the afternoon showers for their walk in Melkernagh bog near Lismacaffrey on Sunday 22 May 2022. The bog was soft underfoot and the group were surrounded by the sounds of the bog in early summer: birdsong, including a distant cuckoo and closer to hand the roar of a machine cutting turf to add to the rows of sods left out to dry beside the track. The quiet roads outside the bog were lined with wild flowers and in contrast several houses had beautifully cultivated front gardens.
Thank you to Deirdre Leavy and her sister Eilish Beglan who led the walk.

On Sunday 5 June the Ramblers will visit Glasson. Cars will leave Boherquill at 1.30pm and meet at 2pm at the Athlone end of Glasson. See boherquillramblers.ie for more information.

Community Alert

The community Alert committee would like to thank all who turned out last Wednesday night to the community alert meeting in the Parish Park. It was heart-warming to see the response of likeminded people concerned about safeguarding their community. Garda crime prevention officer Paddy Guinan was accompanied by Garda Sergeant, Rodger Nichols, who both talked about theft, protecting your property and what to watch out for as we go about our daily business.
We welcomed the news that Streete Parish has been selected to be one of the first areas in Ireland to avail of a new anti-crime response system to be rolled out soon. Paddy Guinan talked about how this new system will free up Gardaí connecting Gardaí to central control and you call for assistance in superfast time. He went on to say this is a break through in modern policing response.
The presentation which was short and very interesting. Both Gardaí stayed with us for a cup of tea talking freely and openly with the people. We look forward to next February when Paddy and the Drug response unit will come to talk and demonstrate the type of drugs on the market and how we can report antisocial behaviour in confidence.

Text alert registration

The committee has been busy collecting in registration forms for the text alert system. If you have not received a registration form and would like to join please let us know or if you have, and you haven’t had a chance to fill it in or get it back to us please let us know on 087 9680739 or 087 1375222. The writer and some other people from the parish had the pleasure of meeting former President, Mary McAleese with Minister of State, Helen McEntee last week.  They were engaged in making a documentary for L.T.V.Television on famous Monastic Sites with particular spiritual influences.  They visited the Abbey and did the new walk recently opened followed by some invited guests including members of the I.F.A. Farm Family and other organisations for tea and lovely treats at Jane’s tea rooms.

Local comments, with which I agree was that Mrs. McALeese was as lovely and warm as ever, having had a word for everyone present and standing for loads of photographs.   P.J. Reilly, Fore’s resident Tourist Guide filled us in with the historical facts about Fore, which made for interesting listening and Alice Nerney spoke about the recent Green Ribbon “Walk & Talk “ occasion in Fore.  Thanks to Jane for her usual excellent spread of tea, cakes etc.  It was a most enjoyable afternoon.

Mrs. McAleese now lives in County Roscommon with her husband, Martin.  The programme is due to be aired in the autumn, so keep an eye on these notes in the months ahead.

The Ramblers travelled to Ballinagh, County Cavan on Sunday 28 July 2019 for a walk to Fleming's Folly on nearby Belville Hill. There is now a 7.5km loop walk to the Folly from which the Ramblers were able to appreciate the fine view which is said to take in 7 counties.

Boherquill Ramblers

The weather held dry for most of the Ramblers Family Day in Boora Bog Discovery Park on Sunday 21 July 2019. After tea and buns in the Visitor Centre they visited the Sculpture Park where a couple of  old  Bord na Mona locomotives had been added to the other large-scale exhibits. Then on to the Mesolithic Trail, named after the site where traces of some of the earliest signs of human activity in Ireland have been found.

All around there was an abundance of wild flowers, especially in the Grey Partridge Conservation Area where the numbers of the birds are slowly increasing after being threatened with extinction a few years ago. The pastel blue flowers of chicory and many shades of orchids were striking.

The rain started near the end of the walk so the group had to take cover for their post-walk refreshments but this didn't spoil the enjoyment of the day.  Many thanks to Club Chair Eileen Moreton who organised the day.

The Ramblers will meet again on Sunday 1 September in Newtowncashel for a walk to Saints Island.
New members and new walks are always welcome. For details phone Philip at 087 7753612 or Nini at 086 8754411.  See boherquillramblers.ie

Boherquill Ramblers

The  Olde Fair Day in Ballinamuck on Sunday 14 July 2019 was a good excuse for the Ramblers to get out for an early walk. They began their walk at 11am beside the 1798 Memorial Hall in the village, a reminder of the Battle of Ballinamuck where the French forces supporting the 1798 Irish Rebellion were defeated. The Ramblers enjoyed a delightful road and bog walk with honeysuckle in the hedgerows and foxgloves among the many wild flowers on the roadside verges.

The village itself was full of containers of brightly coloured flowers on every windowsill and wall. The Ramblers picnicked in the beautiful Remembrance Garden and visited the beautifully restored Johnny's Cottage where a welcoming turf fire awaited them.

After their picnic the Ramblers joined the crowds at the Olde Fair where there was music, food and many other attractions. Thank you to Marian Carty who led the walk.

On Sunday 28 July 2019 the Ramblers will visit Fleming's Folly near Ballinagh. Cars will leave Boherquill at 1.30pm and meet in the car park at the Community Centre in Ballinagh at 2pm. The walk is a 9km mix of road and forest trail.

This walk is the Ramblers last outing before their August break, they will meet again on Sunday 1 September in Newtowncashel for a walk to Saints Island.

Boherquill Ramblers

On 23 June 2019 the Ramblers visited Newtownforbes, County Longford. Their loop walk through the lush countryside to the south of the town highlighted different aspects of local history. New housing estates in the town gave way to old farmhouses with stone outbuildings. Swifts circled above Lisnabo House which was built around 1815 as a Church of Ireland school and later in the walk the route skirted the old forest of Newtownforbes Demesne.

Back towards the town again there were many large modern houses as the group neared the end of their walk.  Thank you to Marita MacNerney and Mary Brady who led the walk.

On Sunday 7 July 2019 the group will visit Lilliput beside Lough Ennell for a 10km road and cross-country walk. Boots should be worn as the ground will be rough in places and no dogs are allowed as farmland will be crossed. Cars will leave Boherquill at 1.30pm and meet at Jonathan Swift Park in Lilliput at 2pm.

New members and new walks are always welcome. For details phone Philip at 087 7753612 or Nini at 086 8754411.  See boherquillramblers.ie

Boherquill Ramblers

Warm sun, birdsong and the smells of the forest were some of the pleasures experienced during the Ramblers walk near Glasson on Sunday 16 June 2019. Add to that some wonderful views over Lough Ree from Caraun Hill at the beginning of the walk and banks of rhododendrons in flower beside the road through the forest later in the afternoon. With a bit of history thrown in as the route later passed through the ruins of  Waterstown House a very varied afternoon's walk was enjoyed by all.

There will be no walk on Sunday 30 June 2019 as Streete Vintage Festival will be held over the weekend. The Ramblers send their best wishes to the Festival Committee and trust the day will be as successful as in previous years.
